Map of the United States showing the path of totality for the 2017 Solar Eclipse
This map indicates the path of totality for the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse. The lines marked 90%, 80%, etc, indicate how much of the sun will be blocked by the moon in those locations of North America. The closer you are to the 100%/path of totality, the more extreme the experience will be. As the moon’s shadow passes over you, it will not be completely dark, but it will seem like the sun has already set – in the middle of the day! Similar to how the sky went dark around Jesus’ death, some explain the phenomenon as a total solar eclipse.
